Weaving an Immersive Tapestry of Space and Light in the Heart of Delhi

Updated: Nov 2

"The Loom" by PORTAL92

Transforming what was once a mundane space into "The Loom," Portal 92 has created an environment where design elements intertwine like threads on a loom, crafting a rich and immersive experience. This project expertly navigates the challenge of adding spatial depth within an enclosed setting by embracing the concept of layering—both physical and conceptual.

At the heart of "The Loom" lies a foundational layer, akin to the base of a loom, finished in a stone-aggregate texture that mirrors the tactile quality of Khadi fabric. Its undulating curves and rugged surface create intimate pockets and a sense of enclosure. Complemented by pixelated seamless flooring, this base layer establishes a fluid continuity throughout the space.

Rising above this tactile base is a wooden cove that mimics the harness of a loom. Its warm tones provide a striking contrast to the stone-aggregate finish, adding depth and warmth to the overall design. Above this, a network of sleek wooden rafters forms a lattice framework, reminiscent of a handloom in motion. These rafters not only create a visually intriguing ceiling treatment but also house track lights, bathing the space in a soft, ambient glow.

The intricate wooden lattice is adorned with a fringe-like drape of metal tassels, cascading gracefully and interacting with ambient lighting. The strategic use of mood lighting enhances the layered ambiance, while alabaster light fixtures scattered throughout evoke the delicate art of knitting. Each beam of light mirrors the precision of a needle weaving through fabric, adding a touch of elegance and complexity to "The Loom."

"The Loom" is more than just a space; it's a meticulously crafted tapestry of design and light, offering an immersive experience that seamlessly blends texture, warmth, and ambient illumination.
