Black and White Zebra Lines Adorn a Pink Backdrop for this Restaurant in Kanpur

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

The Pink Zebra by Renesa Architects

The Pink Zebra or Feast India Co. (FIC) is a take on the bygone British Culture in the city of Cawnpore (Kanpur).

With the extravagance of the European Grandeur, not many know how important the city of Cawnpore (now Kanpur) was to the British Corporation while their rule in India. The design story initiates the change over time by re-writing an architectural essay through the space amalgamation of the old and new quirkiness of the Art Nouveau glitz.

The purpose of making 'The Pink Zebra' was resonate along the lines of a complex and contradictory architecture based on the richness and ambiguity between the old and modern experience including the experience which is inherent in art. The core idea was to create a hybrid rather than pure, compromising but clean leaving the visitor hanging in the middle of an artistic sea.

The studio evolved ideas initiated from the client's love for Wes Anderson's ideologies and his love for fearful quirkiness along with structured frames throughout this space. The love for extreme symmetry and restricted color palettes can often give the expression of a surreal, self-contained world but adding a certain bizarre element to break that monotony of Wes's spatial ideology. This resulted in the black and white zebra lines dipping themselves in the pink monotone that was set in the British Raj's colonial order.

The Pink Zebra (FIC) sits on one of the oldest buildings of Kanpur and helps defining the transition of old to new through design channeling and interior architecture in this playful setting.

The site is a fascinating experience and cultivates the ideas of renaissance in old structures during the British Raj to the new age Kanpur using very bold and fierce narrative. Sometimes, architecture seeks to find a harmony between the disconnect of design and gastronomy through a phenomenological relationship of branding.

The Pink Zebra breaks the monotony of the conventional food culture in Kanpur and exhibits a blend of architectural elements into the culinary experience.
