Facility for Forest Essentials by Morphogenesis
Nestled in the Himalayan foothills along the banks of the Ganges, Forest Essentials is a magnificent display of sustainable design and community-focused architecture.
The intervention sensitively responds to the site’s surrounding climate and immediate context, using design strategies and renewable energy systems that results in a building with a net-zero dependence on energy, water, and waste.
The butterfly roof form takes advantage of local winds for ventilation providing 80% naturally lit spaces. The materials used in the exterior were analysed and optimized to provide a high thermal mass façade, resulting in an energy-efficient building envelope.
The use of renewable energy systems like the solar roof generates surplus energy to supply back to the state grid. The project's holistic approach to sustainability is further evident in the repurposing of leftover and waste materials on the site, such as reclaimed wooden rafters, waste purlin sections, and stone chisels, to make light fixtures, tube light holders, door handles, and washbasin pedestals, respectively.
Moreover, the project incorporates the existing 'gaushala' into the planning and provision of large gathering spaces promoting the local culture of close-knit communities. The use of local materials, techniques, and labour strengthens the project's ethos. The Lodsi Community Project for Forest Essentials aims to set a new benchmark for a decentralized community with a global footprint.
This project is a shining example of sustainable design, community involvement, and local vernacular architecture. The designers have successfully incorporated a sense of place, history, and culture into their design, while also pushing the envelope for building performance. The project is a perfect blend of aesthetics and sustainability, setting a new standard for community-focused architecture.
