Telugu Medium by Sona Reddy Studio
Telugu Medium, a 5,200 square foot hospitality venture in Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills, is a masterpiece of architectural brilliance. Led by Sona Reddy Studio with Anjali Miriyala and Jemy Joy, this authentic Andhra restaurant skillfully merges traditional and contemporary elements. Co-founded by Malvika Rao, Anil Karnati, and Rohit Medisetty, the restaurant is a celebration of Deccan culture through the use of indigenous materials and traditional construction techniques.
The design prominently features massive brick domes, vaults, and exposed load-bearing walls, reducing reliance on concrete and steel to maintain a naturally cooler environment in Hyderabad's heat. The exterior, clad in exposed Karimnagar bricks with projecting bricks and concrete planters, creates a tactile and inviting façade. An alfresco area paved in brick connects the restaurant to its environment, with outdoor seating under canopies adding a layer of comfort and interaction with the curved brick fins and framed views.
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a dual-leveled space with 13-foot high walls and a double-height atrium bathed in natural light, setting a dramatic stage for the restaurant’s design. The ceiling showcases crafted brickwork and silhouette lighting that shifts the ambiance throughout the day.
The interior furnishings blend timeless and contemporary elements, reflecting South Indian dining in a modern light. Brick-moulded ceilings, concrete columns, pink lime plastered walls, and tandoor-textured flooring create a cohesive aesthetic. A striking internal staircase with fluted glass leads to the atrium, while a central bar counter made of pink granite and a serene rectangular pond with black limestone tiles provide focal points of tranquility.
Telugu Medium is not just a restaurant; it’s a fusion of rustic charm and modern elegance, offering a dining experience that harmoniously blends heritage and innovation.
