Boulder House by HabitArt Architecture Studio
Set within the serene landscapes of Shoolagiri, the Boulder House stands as a beacon of sustainable design and architectural harmony. This project, rooted in the heart of elephant country, is a seamless blend of environmental respect and modern living.
The 2,400 sq. ft. home, surrounded by boulders and fruit plantations, is a masterclass in vernacular architecture. Locally sourced materials like mud, stone, wood, and clay shape the structure, reinforcing its connection to the region. Stabilized mud blocks, crafted on-site, not only optimize costs but also enhance the house’s thermal efficiency, making it a perfect retreat from the area’s harsh climate.
Crafted by local artisans, the load-bearing structure embodies community collaboration, resulting in a home that is as much a part of Shoolagiri’s cultural fabric as its landscape. The construction incorporates repurposed quarry rock and mining waste, minimizing environmental impact while showcasing resourceful engineering.
Inside, the design prioritizes natural light and ventilation, with a double-height volume and the "Stack Effect" ensuring a cool interior year-round. A strategically placed rock outcrop forms a natural courtyard, while high-volume pitched roofs with clay tiles provide thermal insulation.
Solar power, rainwater harvesting, and a bio-digester system further exemplify the home’s commitment to sustainability. Boulder House is more than a residence; it’s a dialogue between architecture and nature, offering a vision for the future where design and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
