Unnikrishnan Residence by Radhika Utpat Studio
Radhika Utpat Studio took on the challenge of designing a home that reflects the client's personal sensibilities while retaining the builder-provided interior shell. The result is an artistically experimental space where functional art takes center stage. Handcrafted artworks, curated pieces, and custom-designed furniture blur the line between art and functionality, creating a distinctive and transformative living environment.
Located in the prestigious Koregaon Park Annexe, Pune, this bright and expansive flat is part of an upscale gated community. The client sought a warm, bespoke home that embodied understated luxury while retaining the existing interior finishes. The architect envisioned a personalized space that seamlessly blended the client’s tastes with the provided materials.
The main challenge was working within the existing material palette, including wallpapers, flooring, and lighting. The design required careful integration of these elements to create a cohesive aesthetic. Each change was strategically planned to maximize the transformative impact of the space. The architect employed a sculptural design strategy, focusing on small yet impactful interventions. By highlighting specific walls, creating focal points, and designing furniture as functional art, the space was restructured to enhance its visual appeal. A harmonious color palette of ivory, black, and terracotta was chosen to complement the existing materials while introducing warmth and cohesion.
The open space from the entrance to the common area was defined by a central axis—a monolithic wall that runs from the entrance to the family room, creating spatial structure and serving as the home’s focal point. The interplay of textures, such as the cool-toned Carrara marble flooring and the earthy terracotta lime-plaster wall, adds depth and warmth. Sculptural art and custom furniture elevate the space, creating intimate seating clusters and a visually engaging environment.
Embracing a brutalist approach, the son’s room features clean lines, sculptural furniture, and a Corten-steel finish. The monochromatic color scheme is complemented by custom black lighting fixtures and cement-cast artworks, resulting in an industrial yet refined atmosphere.
Inspired by the wabi-sabi philosophy, the guest bedroom celebrates simplicity and the beauty of imperfection. Natural materials, a taupe textured wall, and solid acacia wood furniture create a tranquil, organic space. Abstract artworks and curated decor add subtle touches of nature’s influence.
The master bedroom draws inspiration from the architectural ruins of Hampi, with column grid patterns and sculptural forms in white ash wood and brass. The interplay of dark wood and sleek brass creates a harmonious balance, while earthy tones and natural materials evoke a sense of history and artistry.
The home office features sculptural furniture pieces, including an arched cabinet, a black desk with custom woodwork, and a serpentine sofa. The contrast of organic forms and sleek grid lines, along with tactile materials like leather and wool, creates a refined and comfortable workspace.
This home in Koregaon Park, Pune, exemplifies the artful integration of sculpture, design, and functionality. By working within existing constraints, the architect transformed the space into a personalized sanctuary that balances artistic expression with practical living.
