An artist credited with significant contributions to the field of ceramic design, Mudita Bhandari shares with us few of her feature works.
Title: ‘Suspended’
Medium: Terracotta (fired at 1150 degree C)
Size: 21(h) x 14 inches
‘Suspended’ was part of the Digging TIME show. The idea was to create a cloud out of
knotted forms hung very low to bring out the essence of something that weighs very heavily.
It’s about how a thought in one’s mind can get knotted up weighing very heavily at one time
and yet just float away like a little cloud in time.
These knotted forms are wheel thrown hollow tubes converted into different shapes and sizes.
They were fired at 1150 degrees in different parts of the kiln to bring out the colour
variations.
Title: ‘Just…’
Medium: Terracotta (fired at 1150 degree C and smoke fired)
Size: largest 9(h) x 19.5 x 7.4 inches
Smallest: 6.5(h) x 17 x 4.5 inches
Display dimensions variable
‘Just…’ has been exhibited in a show called ‘In The Woods I’ curated by Frank
Schlichtmann where all the art works were exhibited out in the open in the hilly forest area
full of trees in Gunehar, Himachal Pradesh. It was an attempt to bring the art works out of
preconceived gallery space into an open space without any boundaries of where the gallery
starts or ends. To bring the art work out of the spotlight and into the nature.
It was the essence of flowing and floating regardless of the things happening around that has
intrigued me for a while. These forms were inspired by a leaf or an unattended boat which
drifts / floats just by itself in whichever direction is guided in by the water or the wind,
without any control of its movement, like a quiet dance. It was this quiet, serene space that is
just there in that moment that I tried to bring out with these forms.
Title: ‘Musings’ Series
Medium: Terracotta (fired at 1150 degree C and smoke fired)
Size: 11(h) x 9.5 x 13 inches
9(h) x 9 x 12 inches
‘Musings’ was also part of the show ‘In The Woods’, these forms hung low
giving a feeling of swaying in one’s own idle thoughts or dreams… here the walls within the
form are more open playing with the light and shadow, inviting the viewer to look into them,
move within them and enjoy the reverie created by them. The forms are hand built with coils,
like nests carrying within them a sense drifting thoughts, ideas, feelings that float freely in
and out of the form.
Title: ‘Shifting Boundaries’
Dimensions: Dimensions variable
Largest piece: 10.5 x 7 inches
Smallest piece: 5 x 6 inches
Material: Terracotta (fired at 1150 degree C) and Paper Mache
A sense of home where nothing feels less or more, equal or unequal... where everything seems at
peace, this sense too is ever changing...
Boundaries or identities, whether internal or external, physical or psychological, political or
economical… strong yet fragile, keep changing, playing, shifting… like shadows that change with the movement of light… are they then real or just an illusion?!
